Academic oriented competitive examinations

There are fundamentally 2 types of competitive exams viz. Career-oriented and Academic-oriented exams. Those exams like JEE clearing which a student becomes eligible for admissions into a college are called Career-oriented exams. Those exams which have little or no relevance to the career progression of the student but test the academic knowledge of the student only are called Academic Oriented exams.

There are at least 15 different competitive exams at school level till Std.10 in various subjects which are organized by various governmental, private and semi-governmental bodies. There are few other such exams administered from Std.11-12 too. The list of popular Academic oriented exams is as under :

MTS (Maharashtra Talent Search) Exam :

This exam is conducted every year since 1991 by Modern Education Society (Wadia College Trust) for students of Std. VIII, IX and X. For this academic year, MTS exam is usually conducted in 3rd week of April. The subjects include Science, Math, Mental Ability and Social Sciences. IPM (Institute for Promotion of Mathematics) :

This exam is conducted for students of Std. III to IX in the subject of Mathematics. The exam is usually conducted in 2nd week of April. Application forms are available from now onwards till November end. For more details, visit www.ipm-mathemagic.com or call 020-25810540.

NSO (National Science Olympiad) :

This exam is conducted for students from Std. III – XII year wise. The exam is usually conducted in the last week of November. Application forms are available from school. Visit: www.sofworld.org.

NSTSE (Unified Council Exam) :

This exam is conducted for students from Std. II – XII year wise. The exam is usually conducted in first week of February. Last Date for form filling is Sept-mid. For more details visit www.unifiedcouncil.com or call 040-24557708.

NTS (National Talent Search)Exam :

This exam is conducted for Std. X students only. The exam will be conducted in 3 stages ,two written papers and an interview. Stage I is usually conducted in 2nd week of November. Homi Bhabha Science Exam :

This exam is conducted for Std.9 students by the Mumbai Science Teachers Association. It has 3 stages viz. Written exam, then Practicals and then Project. The forms are filled through your school or by visiting the website : www.msta.in. The last date for forms is July-end and written exam is in third week of September.

Astronomy Olympiad :

It is conducted by the IAPT and the exam is conducted in December and has 4 selection stages. Visit : www.khagolmandal.com
